Steel mountain path for Hamburg's “Green Bunker”

It is a high-profile project to which we have made our contribution, because it is not often that a city garden is built at a height of 58 meters on top of an old bunker in a metropolis, as is the case in Hamburg, or more precisely St. Pauli.

The “green bunker” is effectively the new, natural air conditioning system for the district. The path to the roof garden is the “mountain path”, a 560 meter long and 5 meter wide ascent with 389 steps that winds its way up around the outside of the bunker. We manufactured and installed 24 steel support arms, each weighing around 5.5 tons, and attached them to the outer façade. We also supplied stairs, railings and other steel structures.

The scale of the project was not the only reason why we were able to demonstrate what C + P is capable of. The logistics were also challenging: after all, the bunker is a listed building. In addition, the area in front of it, the Heiligengeistfeld, was only accessible for 24 weeks, i.e. just under half the year, due to the "Hamburg Dom" fair. And for the largest 30-metre-long and 35-tonne steel girder on the west side, a 200-ton crane had to be erected under these conditions.

For those who would like to see the extraordinary building and the art of steel construction live and in color: The roof garden has been accessible since summer 2024 and below it there is a hotel, restaurants and an event hall on five newly raised floors.
